Satish Ghatpande
Paper Sculptor | Pune, India

Satish Ghatpande is a paper sculptor with over four decades of artistic practice, known for transforming paper into intricate three-dimensional works depicting culture, nature, and human life.

PHILOSOPHY

His work is guided by the belief that art should be experienced directly. By avoiding unnecessary abstraction, each creation invites the viewer to engage with detail, form, and narrative without barriers.

This approach bridges the gap between fine art and wider audiences, making his work both accessible and enduring.

APPROACH

Working with paper as a primary medium, Ghatpande redefines its role from a supporting surface to a structural and expressive form. Each sculpture is developed through a meticulous, handcrafted process that demands patience, control, and technical refinement.

His subjects range from cultural and historical figures to birds, rural life, and natural forms—rendered with clarity and realism that allow immediate visual connection.

JOURNEY

Trained in Applied Arts at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune, he began his career in advertising, where he developed a strong foundation in composition, detail, and visual storytelling. Over time, this evolved into a dedicated practice in paper sculpture, where he explored the expressive potential of a fragile yet powerful medium.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Through his body of work titled “Paper Magic,” he has developed a distinctive artistic language—marked by realism, structural precision, and handcrafted intricacy. His sculptures reflect patience, discipline, and a deep engagement with material.

TEACHING & CONTRIBUTIONS

In addition to his artistic practice, he serves as a visiting faculty member at Symbiosis Institute of Design (Pune), where he mentors students and encourages experimentation with unconventional materials. His workshops and demonstrations have introduced paper sculpture to a wide range of audiences.

His work continues to expand the possibilities of paper as a sculptural medium, contributing to the broader landscape of contemporary Indian art.

Over the years, his work has been presented through exhibitions in Pune and Mumbai at venues including Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Indiaart Gallery, and

Bal Gandharva Kala Dalan.

In addition to his artistic practice, he has contributed to art education as a visiting faculty member at institutions such as Symbiosis Institute of Design, mentoring students and encouraging experimentation with materials.

Through sustained dedication to an unconventional medium, Satish Ghatpande continues to expand the possibilities of paper as a sculptural art form, contributing meaningfully to the evolving landscape of contemporary Indian art.
